GRAY, An Animated Film by Xuan Chen, Film Length 8 minutes 50 seconds, Aspect Ratio 4:3, 2009

In the film Gray, the creation of conflicts is an important aspect of facilitating the narratives. Through conformity and differences, tensions build within the narratives through the relationships between groups, between the individual and the group, and between individuals within the group. Those relationships are the basis from which our culture, our sense of self, and our identity are constructed. The conflicts and tensions deal with my personal experiences, such as the exploration and struggles with my own identity, inner conflicts, miseries and as a minority in the United States. I intend to present these issues for both myself and the observer to ponder. I have tried to include moments from transcendent realities, random events, intuitions as well as intentionally obscured feelings in order to allow room for interpretation. Experimental sound composition is used in Gray. The music creates a hunting effect that recalls viewers’ melancholic emotions however it does not represent any specific music genres.
